Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

Nancy Wilson is a Grammy Award winner in jazz. She was born 20th February 1937 in Chillicothe OH to Olden Wilson who was a worker in an ironworks, and Lillian Ryan, a former domestic employee. Nancy is the youngest out of 6 siblings. Nancy was greatly influenced as a girl by the music that her father was a fan of and played when she was at home. By the age of four, Nancy knew that she wanted to be a musician. She developed her musical talent through participating in choirs of the church. She was a finalist on a talent show on TV at the age of 15 and started being a regular on the tv series Skyline Melodies while still in high school. In the nightclubs she started performing at the age of fifteen. Nancy completed high school aged 17 and enrolled in Ohio's Central State College, now Central State University for a entire year. After that, she left to pursue a job as a professional musician. In 1956, she made her debut album as part of Rusty's Carolyn Club Big Band with which she toured between 1956 and 1958. Nancy released her debut recording through Dot Records during the time she was with the group. Cannonball Adderley advised that she should move to New York to further her professional career. She moved into The Big Town in 1959. The singer was brought in to sing at The Blue Morocco Night Club located in The Bronx, where Adderley's agent had come across her. He obtained a contract for the label Capitol records in 1960, and she debuted that year, with a single. Guess who I saw today. Capitol Records came out with five Nancy Wilson albums over a two-year period. Under Adderley Wilson's leadership, Wilson started focusing on R&B and then shifted her focus towards torch and jazz. The 1962 group collaboration of Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley helped propel her to the top as she released her biggest song Tell Me the Truth in 1963. It led her to perform at the New York's Coconut Grove the premier night club in America that year, and she quickly became a legend.
