Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

Jazz performer Nancy Wilson a three-time Grammy Award winner was born on February 20 1937 in Ohio, Chillicothe. She was the daughter of iron worker Olden Wilson and his wife Lillian Ryan who worked as a domestic servant. Nancy was the youngest of six children. Nancy was greatly influenced as a girl by the music her dad enjoyed and loved playing at home. When she was just four years old, she realized she'd be a singing star. Her talent developed due to her participation in the choir at church. In high school, she began to appear frequently on Skyline Melodies. She was 15 when she was crowned the winner of the TV talent show. It was at that time that she began to work in night clubs at that similar age. Nancy was 17 at the time she completed high school. After matriculating at Ohio Central State College - which is now Central State University - for only one semester Nancy left to be an experienced performer. In 1956 she released her debut record as part of Rusty's Carolyn Club Big Band with whom she toured from 1956 until 1958. Nancy's initial Dot Records recording was made when she was a member of the big band of the Carolyn Club. Cannonball Aderley suggested she move into New York so as to increase her chances of success. In 1959 she moved into The Big Town. She was hired to sing at The Blue Morocco Night Club located in The Bronx, where Adderley's agent had come across her. In 1960, she was signed to Capitol Records and in that same year she issued her first single. Guess who I saw today? Capitol released five Nancy Wilson records in just two years. Under the direction of Cannonball Adderley Wilson's direction, she began to focus on R&B but soon shifted towards torch and jazz. Their collaboration in 1962 with Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley helped propel her to fame and her breakthrough smash Tell Me the Truth in 1963. This performance helped her land a gig at New York Coconut Grove in 1963, which was America's biggest nightclub.
