Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson
Nancy Wilson is a Grammy Award winner in jazz. Her birth date was February 20, 1937, in Chillicothe Ohio, to Olden Wilson, who was employed at an ironworks and Lillian Ryan, a former domestic worker. Nancy was the eldest of six children. Her father was a fan of music and loved to play records in the family. This was a major influence upon her growing up. When she was young she had already developed an idea of her identity and what she hoped to accomplish. The church choir helped develop the talent. After winning a talent competition in a television show at the age of 15 years old, she began to regularly appear in Skyline Melodies, while still at high school. At the same age she started working in nightclubs. Nancy was a high school graduate at 17 and attended Ohio's Central State College, now Central State University for a whole year. She then dropped out to pursue a job as professional musician. Her first album was in Rusty's Carolyn Club Big Band, with whom she performed between 1956 and 1958. Nancy recorded her first album via Dot Records during the time she spent in this band. Cannonball Adderley urged her to travel for a trip to New York in order to advance her career. The city she went to was The Big Town, New York in 1959. The singer was brought in to sing at The Blue Morocco Night Club located in The Bronx which was where her agent had heard her. In 1960, he signed her to Capitol Records and in that the same year, she debuted her debut single. Guess who? Capitol released five Nancy Wilson records in just two years. Adderley helped her move away from R&B in favor of jazz and torch song. The 1962 group collaboration of Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley helped propel her to prominence as she released her biggest song Tell Me the Truth in 1963. The following year, this led to her being booked at the New York's Coconut Grove - the top nightclub in America.
