Nancy Wilson (jazz singer) was born to Olden Wilson, the Chillicothe ironworker on 20 February 1937. Her mother, Lillian Ryan worked as a household servant. Nancy Wilson was the only baby of six. Nancy was extremely influenced when she was a young girl by the music her father was a fan of and played when she was at home. At the age of 4years old, Nancy was aware her destiny was to be a singer. Her talents were developed when she sang in the choir of her church. Following her win in a talent show on TV around the age of 15, she started to regularly appear in Skyline Melodies, while still in high school. At nightclubs, she began singing at the age of 15. Nancy was just 17 when she finished high school. After matriculating at Ohio Central State College - now Central State University - for only one semester Nancy went on to become professional performers. In 1956, she recorded her debut album in Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band. The group toured with Rusty Bryant between 1956 and 1958. Nancy's initial Dot Records recording was made during her time in the Big Band of Carolyn Club. Cannonball Adderley urged her to travel for a trip to New York in order to increase her fame. The city she went to was The Big Town, New York in the year 1959. Within a short time, she was singing in The Blue Morocco Night Club located on Boston Road near The Bronx. The representative of Adderley saw her singing and instantly took her on. The contract was signed signing her with Capitol Records in the year 1960. she made her debut that year with the single. Guess whom I am seeing today. Capitol issued five Nancy Wilson records in just two years. Adderley influenced her to move away from R&B in favor of the torch and jazz genres. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley's collaboration in 1962 helped to make her a star and her hit Tell Me the Truth was recorded in 1963. The performance helped her land a gig at New York Coconut Grove in 1963. It was the most crowded in America's nightclub.
